A patient party has alleged wilful negligence on the part of the doctors and nurses of JNIMS on duty at Ante-Natal Ward causing elimination of the firstborn baby in the afternoon of Monday (November 28).

Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club on Tuesday, Thiulungpou Gangmei, grandfather of deceased child said her daughter-in-law, Machungliu Kamei, W/o Kasangai Riamei, came all the way from Nungadang/Goitang, Khoupum, Noney District on Monday and was registered at the JNIMS OPD at 1.30 pm. And later at about 2.30 pm she was admitted into the Ante-Natal Ward and while waiting outside the ward she started complaining of labour pain and trivialities, Thiulungpou Gangmei continued.

Then, at about 3.30 pm she was allotted a bed in the ward at bed No. 10, the grandfather said, adding that her daughter’s labour pain was intensifying minute by minute then. At about 4.30 pm, there was a waste discharge from her private part with fluids but the doctors and nurses failed to attend to her despite repeated requests from the patient party, Thiulungpou Gangmei alleged. They even told the patient party that such gruelling pains and complaints are normal for first time delivery cases and ignored the repeated request for immediate attention, he added.

At about 6 pm a lady doctor came and checked her serious condition and shifted her to the labour room and after about 40 minutes, the patient party was informed that the baby was dead inside the mother's womb, the grandfather of the deceased baby said. After 7 pm the mother was brought to the ward, he informed.

For the last five to six months, my daughter-in-law was treated at JNIMS and as per doctor's advice the baby could be delivered in normal condition. So, she came for delivery all the way from Khoupum, about 100 km from Imphal in normal, healthy condition. However, she was not given proper attention after her admission into JNIMS, Thiulungpou Gangmei stated.

Therefore, he urged the JNIMS authority to investigate/probe into this wilful negligence on the part of doctors and nurses on duty which led to the death of the first baby of his daughter-in-law and penalise those responsible for this tragic incident.

Thiulungpou Gangmei said that his family will not claim the lifeless body of his grandchild until justice is delivered to them at the earliest.
