The Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) on Monday condemned the attempt to malign the media of the state through social media platforms by some vested people.
Some vested people posted images taken from TOM TV report on an unfortunate incident in which a student was shot dead in Heirok this month, said EGM in a release.
It stated that the image posted on the Facebook page of BJYM Heirok Mandal was edited in such a manner that it not only maligned the reputation of TOM TV but had the potential to create misunderstanding and hatred among already troubled people of the area.
The image, though taken down from Facebook now, is already viral on several social media platforms, it added.
Asserting that the image was taken from the footage of December 22 of Tom TV, it said that Tom TV authority has already submitted a written complain with the SP Cyber Crime, Manipur Police.
The EGM expect the Cyber Crime unit to take up the case immediately and book the culprit so that such activities are not repeated in the future, continued the release.
"This is not the first time media in Manipur have been targeted by vested people. Several unsolved cases are lying with the Cyber crime already," it mentioned.
The release drew the attention of the new DGP of Manipur police to take up the matter before the media fraternity decide to take other steps to get justice. It also appealed to all citizens not to misuse the media resources to spread fake news and create hatred and animosity among the general public.
