Shiv Sena Manipur state unit president M Tombi Singh has urged the people of Manipur to protect the ‘Sangai’ from poachers even as the government is organising Sangai Festival to promote the brow-antlered deer.
Speaking to the media at his state office located at Babupara, Imphal on Thursday, Tombi said that to protect and promote the Sangai, the state government is organising the Sangai Festival which is one of the biggest tourism festivals of Manipur.
However, it is reported that some people are consuming the Sangai deer, he said and appealed to the people to protect the unique deer as without the support from the public, conservation and protection of Sangai cannot be done by the government alone.

During the Sangai festival, many tourists will be coming and it is important that the people cooperate, including foreign tourists so that more tourists are attracted in the following days, said Tombi.
The Shiv Sena president also said that the demand for Schedule tribe status for Meetei/Meitei is a legitimate demand in order to protect the indigenous rights of Manipur. Shiv Sena supports the movement that is being carried out by STDCM, he added.
He said there will be no harm to go into any religion after getting the ST status.
