The District Congress Committee, Churachandpur (DCCC) on Saturday condemned the obstruction to AICC leader Rahul Gandhi's visit to Churachandpur and urged the authorities concerned to conduct a thorough investigation.

In view of the prolonged crisis situation in Manipur, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the state on June 29-30. His convoy, which was headed for Churachandpur, was blocked by the Manipur police on reaching Bishnupur, and it sparked off a massive clash betweeen the public and police.

The DCCC said in a release that obstructing Rahul Gandhi and his convoy on their visit to Churachandpur on Thursday was an attempt to suppress the voice of the opposition. It was an "unwarranted and unjustified act" on the part of the state BJP government, the DCCC added.

"The authorities concerned should conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and hold those responsible accountable for their actions," the DCCC said, strongly condemning the act.

The DCCC also said that the state government should respect the democratic rights of political leaders and allow them to fulfill their responsibility without unwarranted hindrances.

Contrary to the claim made by the state police at Bishnupur Police Station, there were no threats or protests against Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the state, but rather the people waited enthusiastically for his visit, the DCCC said in a press release.

Saying that it was disheartening to note the government-initiated chaos and roadblock to hinder Gandhi’s visit, the DCCC pointed out that Rahul's visit to Manipur was not for political reasons.

Rahul Gandho's visit to the state was a "pure humanitarian effort" to meet the victim's families, assess the condition and extend support to the people of the strife-torn state, the DCCC said, urging the state government to refrain from repeating such actions in the future.
