Curfew relaxed further as situation eased in parts of violence-hit Manipur

The Pherzawl district administration has ordered daytime relaxation in the indefinite curfew clamped in the district since May 3.

The indefinite curfew, which has been enforced in violence-hit Manipur sinced May 3, has been relaxed further in Pherzawl, Imphal East and Imphanl West districts on Tuesday, May 16, official sources said.  

The curfew in Pherzawl district has lifted from sunrise to sunset in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the district on May 16, the district administration stated in an order issued on Monday.

The administration mentioned that it has been closely monitoring the ground situation, and there
were no reported cases of violence, and the situation in the district remained calm and peaceful.

The curfew in Imphal West and Imphal East has been relaxed from 5 am to 3 pm on May 16, according to the respective district administrations.  

An indefinite curfew was called in 11 districts of the state following the unprecedented violence that broke out between the Meitei and the Kuki communities in these districts on May 3-4. The districts include Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Jiribam, Chandel, and Tengnoupal (Moreh area).

The ethnic violence claimed over 70 innocent lives, according to official figures, and caused massive damage to properties, including residential houses, shops and places of worship. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless and displaced.
