The Manipur government has extended the relaxed curfew timings for all areas in Imphal East and Imphal West districts from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm for Thursday (September 14) against the usual timing of 6 pm.

Total curfew was clamped in Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and some other valley districts after the outbreak of violence in the first week of May and it has been in force since then except for relaxations of some hours.

As the situation slowly returned to a semblance of normalcy, it was relaxed from 5 am to 6 pm in Imphal West and Imphal East on most days. However, it was often clamped again without notice due to occurrence of violence.

The relaxation has been made in view of the development of law and order in the districts, the magistrates of the two districts stated in a notification on Wednesday.

Orders issued by the respective district magistrates on Monday, said that curfew has been relaxed in both districts to facilitate the general public in purchasing essential items including medicines and food.

However, this relaxation will not apply to any gatherings/large-scale movement of persons/sit-in-protests/rallies etc. without obtaining permission from the competent authority, it stated.

Meanwhile, movement of persons belonging to essential services such as health, electricity, PHED, petrol pumps, schools/colleges, municipality, press and electronic media, functioning of courts and to and fro movement of flight passengers to the airport will be exempted from the imposition of curfew after the expiry of the said period of relaxation, it mentioned.

At the filing of this report, no relaxation order was received from other districts.
