Curfew eased for longer hours in Imphal, Chandel, Jiribam

Respective districts administrations extended temporary relief to the people from the indefinite curfew for the sixth day on May 11.

As normalcy slowly begins to return in violence-Manipur, the indefinite curfew clamped in several districts following the recent outbreak of communal clashes has been further relaxed for Chandel, Imphal West, Imphal East amd Jiribam, for the sixth day on May 11, official sources said.

Curfew has been further relaxed in Chandel district for four hours from 6 am to 10 am and 1 pm to 4 pm, seven hours in Imphal West and Imphal East from 5 am to 12 noon, and eight hours in Jiribam from 5 am to 1 pm, according to the separate orders issued by the respective district magistrates on Wednesday.

The government ordered further relaxation in curfew timings in the violence-hit districts of Manipur, citing the return of normalcy and improved situation.

The indefinite curfew has been relaxed in order to felicitate the public to purchase essential items including medicines and food supplies, the orders stated, adding that shops and other retail outlets are allowed to open during the period of cufew relaxation.

All persons belonging to essential services such as health, PHED and transportation of food and water are exempted from further imposition of curfew after the expiry of the said period of relaxation, as per the order.

Total public curfew under section 144 CrPC, 1973, prohibiting movement of any person outside their respective residences, is enforced in several districts since the outbreak of communal violence and arson at several parts of the state on May 3.
