An assistant commandant of 86 battalion CRPF, Lamphel has been apprehended by police on charges of physically assaulting two civilians of Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai, Imphal West district on Friday.
Locals of Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai on Saturday staged a one-day sit-in-protest, decrying the alleged physical assault carried out by assistant commandant of 86 battalion CRPF, Lamphel Daniel Hmar, on two civilians on Friday.
The injured persons are TokpamMalemnganba, 27, son of late T Biren and NaoremOngbiManglembi Devi, 57, wife of N Pradip of SangaiprouMamangLeikai. They were physically assaulted allegedly by Daniel Hmar who charged both the victims of vandalising his house and theft.
The incidentoccurred on Friday around 12.45 pm at SangaiprouMamangLeikai, Imphal West district. It is reported that the house of Daniel Hmar is located at SangaiprouMamangLeikai and it was reportedlyvandalised by a mob during the communal clash.
It is also reported that Daniel Hmar is the younger brother of advisor of All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) Joshep Hmar.
An eyewitness, T Dewan, who is the brother of Malemnganbanarrated that during the communal clash, protestors pelted stones at the residence of Joshep; however, the locals stopped the protesters from torching the house.
On Friday, Daniel allegedly came into the residence ofMalemnganba and physically assaulted him without asking any questions in front of the family members, he said.
Malemganbi said that though her residence is on the other side of Tiddim Road and away from the Daniel’s residence, the assistant commandant assaulted her by accusing her of theft.
A team Imphal West district police led by superintendent of police S Ibomcha rushed to the spot and apprehended Daniel.The injured has been rushed to Raj Medicity for treatment.
Meanwhile, a press statement issued by SangaiprouNaharol Club (SNC) mentioned that the local bodies conducted a meeting in connection with the incident and resolved to issue a charter of demands.
The demands including taking necessary legal actions against Daniel Hmar anddeclaring him as a criminal and others.
Speaking to the media, SanasamongbiRadheshyam Devi, a protester, told the media that the locals strongly condemn the heinous act of Daniel. She said Daniel along with some of his personnel came with uniforms and assaulted the two persons.
She reported that Daniel also threatened the locals, saying that he can turn Sangaiprou into ashes in 5 minutes.
She stated that the women of Sangaiprou demanded to take necessary action against Daniel, and he will be expelled from the locality permanently.
