Cops awarded for arrest of 19 militants who planned to disrupt I-Day 2022 event

A cash reward of Rs 2 lakh was handed to Thoubal District CDO for the arrest of 19 PLA cadres and seizure of arms and ammunition from theit possession. The 19 militants planned to disrupt the Independence Day Celebrations 2022 by planting explosive devices and target non-local people in various valley districts of Manipur, police said.

P Doungel, DGP of Manipur, who along with Ningshen Worngam, DIG R-II visited Thoubal District Police HQ on Monday, presented the award to O Wangkhomba, Addl SP (Ops).

Wangkhomba, assisted by Inspector N Sadananda, OC CDO TBL and Head Constable Telem Jiten Singh under the supervision of Jogeshchandra Haobijam, SP Thoubal, conducted three counter-insurgency operations along with 16 Assam Rifles on 13, 16 and 17 August, 2022.

The arrested PLA cadres were found to be involved in two recent IED blasts in May 2022; one at Durga Mandir, Telepati, Imphal East on 13 May and another at Khongjom Sapam, Thoubal on 30 May and in the recent killings of two non locals; one at Kakching Wairi, Kakching on 23 June and another at Uchol Chingjin, Andro Huikap, Imphal East on 8 July.

They were also involved in a recent grenade attack on non-local workers inside a Sawombung Bridge Construction worksite at Sawombung Thongkhong on August 15.

The arrested persons are still in custody and investigation is under way to arrest others involved in the incidents, police said.
