Convert Tongjei Maril to National Highway: Manipur Shiv Sena

Manipur Shiv Sena on Tuesday said it will submit a memorandum to the central government with the demand to convert Tongjei Maril to National Highway and to depute more police highway patrol cars in order to bring better law and order situation and to avoid illegal taxes along the national highways.

Manipur Shiv Sena president M Tombi told media at its state head office located at Babupara on Tuesday that collection of illegal taxes along the national highways is the core reason for frequent damage along the national highways. He said transporters have been facing various problems along the national highways in connection with the illegal taxes.

After paying different illegal taxes along the national highways, transporters are not able to get profit on transportation of essential commodities. Due to this reason, transporters started engaging heavy vehicles having 16 wheels with a capacity of carrying 45-60 tons.

Such heavy transport trucks are not compatible with the highways and due to the reason frequent road damage occurred along the national highways, said Tombi. He said the Tongjei Maril route that has been used since forefathers’ time is about 30 km shorter than the Imphal-Jiribam road but that it does not have much connecting bridge.

State Shiv Sena will submit a memorandum to the union minister for Road Transport and Highways demanding to convert Tongjei Maril into national highway, the party stated.

Tombi further said, state Shiv Sena also submitted a memorandum to chairman, parliamentary standing committee on housing and urban affairs, Jagdambika Pal demanding various points including removal of AFSPA, 1958 from the whole state of Manipur on May 14.

He said the memorandum included removal of AFSPA, 1958 from the entire state of Manipur, Uniform implementation of MLR and LR Act 1960 for the entire state and to put a National Highway Protection force to both national highways of Manipur.

Tombi also said the State Shiv Sena Manipur unit has appointed 8 (Eight) new persons as executive members of the state party.
