The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has urged all Keithels of Manipur to stage protests on February 28, starting from 11 am to 12 am.
Further, it has asked women to wear red dress and conduct a Meira rally at 7 pm in every locality.
The protests and Meira Rally are aimed at restraining GOI to go for further extension of SoO agreement with Kuki militants.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club on Tuesday, COCOMI coordinator, Somorendro said that since May 3, attacks from Kuki militants have been continuing and the Indian government is not paying heed to the cries of the people.
“As winter assembly session will begin from Wednesday and SoO agreement with Kuki militants will end on the next day, that is on Thursday. So, COCOMI urged all women to protest and Meira Rally”, said Somorendro.
It may be mentioned that COCOMI had submitted a memorandum to the central government, asking it not to extend SoO with Kuki groups.
In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, COCOMI expressed grave concern over the recent surge in violence in Manipur, cautioning that “failure to exercise caution would risk further destabilisation of Manipur and compromise the safety and security of its citizens.”
“As the expiry date of the SoO pact with Chin-Kuki narcoterrorist groups approaches on February 28, 2024, we are compelled to express our deep concerns. Despite numerous extensions since 2008 under the guise of political dialogue, progress in the peace process remains elusive.
Furthermore, there have been repeated and flagrant violations of the agreement’s ground rules, exacerbating the already volatile situation in Manipur,” the committee emphasized in the letter to the Prime Minister.
