Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) coordinator Somorendra Thokchom on Thursday urged the government to take a unanimous decision in the upcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly session to abrogate the SoO agreement with Kuki militants and full implementation of NRC in Manipur.
Somorendro told the media at UCM head office located at Lamphel, Imphal West that the entire MLAs and ministers belonging to Meitei, Meitei Pangal and Naga have no objection to the full implementation of NRC in Manipur.
He said the implementation of NRC in Manipur does not mean filtering out all the Kuki population from Manipur but to find out the illegal immigrants who are mixing up with the local populace in the state. A full implementation of the NRC can also decrease the tension among the communities, he said.
The COCOMI has been demanding for implementation of the NRC with base year as 1951; however, the state cabinet has decided the base year as 1961, he mentioned. The COCOMI supports the decision to take the base year 1961, and the MLAs and Ministers should also take a unanimous decision in the upcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly to be commenced from February 28, he added.
Without even firing a single bullet on the Central forces, the Kuki militants entered into the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement in 2005, he said. Those Kuki militants in SoO are involved in the present crisis by violating the ground rules of the agreement, he said.
Although the Kuki Militants violated the maximum of the ground rules, the Central forces have remained as a silent spectator by not taking necessary steps against them, he added.
Besides, the DC and SP of Churachandpur received life threats from the ITLF in connection with the recent Churachandpur arson of the DC’s and SP’s office.
He mentioned that the DC of a district is an IAS officer, and threatening an IAS officer is a threat to the nation. However, no individual has been arrested in connection with the arson or giving of life threats on the DC and SP, he added.
“Naturally, suspicions have arisen on whether Manipur is still a part of India, or has become a lawless state,” said Somorendro.
On the contrary, the Central forces are taking up stringent action towards the agitators in the central valley of Manipur, he added.
He further appealed to all the MLAs and Ministers belonging to Meitei, Meitei Pangal and Nagas to take a unanimous decision on full implementation of NRC and abrogation of SoO with Kuki militants in Manipur.
