Manipur Chief Minister N Biren on Sunday extended well wishes to the people of the state on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, popularly known as May Day which falls on Monday.
In his message, Biren stated that International Workers’ Day is observed to honour the struggles and gains made by the workers and labourers, for improving their working conditions and demanding higher wages. "On this day let us acknowledge the contribution of every worker in the progress of our country," he said.
It was on this day in the year 1886 that the labour class came together and revolted against the unjust system meted out to them, he recalled. They raised their voices for paid leave, good wages and proper breaks, he mentioned. He continued that the day also symbolises the victory of the working class for their struggle to get an eight-hour work day.
Recognising the important contributions made by the working class and labourers in the development and economic growth of the country, the union government has come up with the eShram portal for creating a comprehensive National Database of unorganised workers and for extending social security benefits/welfare schemes to the workers registered under the portal, he added.
