Massive rallies were held on Wednesday in Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts, Manipur demanding an independent judicial inquiry into, what they called, the extra judicial killing or fake encounter by the Assam police on three youths from the Hmar community in Cachar, Assam on July 16, 2024.
In Churachandpur, the rally was organised by the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Right and Hmar Women Association.
The rally began from Mualvaiphei Playground where rallyists congregated at the Wall of Remembrance, Tuibong via Rangkai and Teddim Road where they organised a programme and later submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister Amit Shah through the DC of Churachandpur district.
The memorandum to the home minister was signed by the president of the KWOHR and HWA, Ngaineikim and Rebecca Hmar respectively, which requested the HM for commissioning an SIT that had to be constituted and monitored by him against the extra judicial action of Assam Police ( Jurisdiction) in regards to the death of three youth from Kuki -Zo community in Assam.
Though details were not available due to internet connectivity, at Senvon town of Pherzawl district, such a rally was also held to press the government for independent judiciary inquiry into the matter. A video of the three, not resisting arrest and a picture of them being killed had reportedly gone viral on social media.
The rallyist in Churachandpur displayed banners that read, “Be careful Assam police, your credibility is in Question”, “Mass rally against the 16th July’s Cachar Fake encounter by Assam Police killing of 3 Hmar Youth.. we demand Independent Judicial enquiry”. They also held placards that read, “Fake encounter is the murder of the rule of law”, “Stop Extra Judicial murder”, “Hmar Life Matters”, “Justice delayed is Justice Denied”, etc., while also shouting slogan such ae we demand justice, Assam Police down down, etc.
