A team of Churachandpur Medical College (CMC) students on Saturday called on Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhawan and submitted a memorandum. The team expressed their concerns over the delay of their annual academic pursuits. They also demanded for a safe location to continue with their classes as soon as possible.
The MBBS students of CMC called on the Governor to make arrangements for conducting physical and practical classes in Imphal considering the prevailing situation in the state.
The governor expressed concern about the students of Manipur and assured that probable measures will be taken up to normalise conducting of classes and added that steps are being taken up to prevent violence and to restore peace and normalcy in the state.
The team of students also submitted the memorandum to Health Minister Sapam Ranjan who assured the students that they will begin their courses at the earliest. However, he did not give a timeframe as to when the classes will start, Thokchom Mangal, 1st year student of CMC told the media.
The students also expressed the traumatic experiences they faced before being safely evacuated from the college hostel and demanded a secure place with proper law and order where they can continue their course.
These students, pursuing first-year MBBS courses at the college, are the first batch after the medical college was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 6 this year.
Of the total 100 students in the first batch, approximately 60 students hail from valley regions of the state.
The students also requested for space arrangements and infrastructure at JNIMS or an immediate alternative arrangement for conducting routine classes at the RD Wing of the Health Department, College of Nursing, Lamphelpat or at the Manipur University Campus.
