Chandel, Kakching implement Manipur Plastic Policy 2022

The ban on single-use plastics in Chandel include all imports of plastic carry bags from Myanmar, Chandel DC stated.

The Deputy Commissioners of Chandel and Kakching districts have issued a ban on single-use plastic by implementing Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022 for the effective management of plastic wastes and complete elimination of such single-use plastic.

An order issued by the Chandel DC on Wednesday stated that the state government vide the notification of secretariat, Forest, Environment and Climate Change department on June 20, 2022 had issued the Manipur Plastic Policy 2022 (MPP, 2022).

It added that all categories of use and throwaway plastics (single-use plastics) are banned with immediate effect. All imports of plastic carry bags from Myanmar to Chandel district shall be banned with immediate effect, it continued.

Plastic carry bags shall not be less than 75 microns in thickness till December 30, and plastic carry bags shall not be less than 120 microns in thickness with effect from December 31 of 2022, it mentioned. Non-woven plastic carry bags shall not be less than 60 g per square meter (GSM), it informed.

The provision in the Para 8.4 of the MPP, 2022 informed the district administration to coordinate the implementation of the policy at the grassroots level with the formation of the District Level Task Force (DLTF), chaired by the DC, the order informed.

“All officials in government and private offices shall be responsible for compliance of the order in all respective functions and establishments, while the organisers of social gatherings and functions shall be responsible for compliance of the order in matters of catering and refreshment services,” it read. It stated that defaulters shall be prosecuted and penalty imposed as permissible under law.

Meanwhile, Kakching DC also issued a notice informing the ban of single-use plastics in the district with effect from July 1.

The notice announced the ban of manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of other single use plastic, polystyrene and expanded polystyrene commodities such as ear buds with plastic stick, plastic flags, candy sticks, Thermocol for decoration, plastic cutleries and utensils, and PET or PETE bottles less than 1 litre capacity for holding drinking water, etc.
