There is an urgent need for an anaesthetist and medicine specialist at Chandel district hospital, CMO of Chandel district, Dr Serthani Serbum said on Tuesday.
The chief medical officer (CMO) was speaking during a special talk with chairman of Japhou Bazaar Authority Hl Lordson Anal in Chandel on Tuesday, regarding the prevailing COVID-19 situation in Chandel district.
During the conversation, the CMO said there has always been the need for an anaesthetist and medicine specialist at Chandel District Hospital but the need has intensified and become more urgent with the surge in COVID-19 infections in the district.

“Even though there is an ICU unit and equipment, the lack of a special anaesthetist is a major weakness for the hospital,” she added.
Medical superintendent of Chandel District Hospital, Dr Joyson Monsang also expressed his agreement with the observation and assessment of the CMO.
The medical superintendent further mentioned the need for a technical staff to operate the new digital X-ray and Ultrasound machine at the hospital.
Highlighting the need for early detection in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, District Surveillance Officer (DSO) Dr Shakchung Serbum made a public appeal for people to get tested at the earliest so that they can avail timely treatment.
“To flatten the surge of positive cases, people need to strictly maintain Covid appropriate behaviour and get vaccinated,” the DSO added.
