Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that the Centre is ready to hold talks with the insurgent groups of the Northeastern region to resolve their problems.

Addressing a public meeting in Manipur's Langthabal Mandal in Imphal West district the Union Defence Minister said that the number of violence has decreased to its lowest level in Northeastern states.

"When our government was formed at the Centre, we had said that we will put a check on terrorism and will solve the problem of insurgency and prepare the ground for development here, Singh said. A lot has changed in Manipur in the last five years. Five years ago, Manipur was counted as a Northeastern state where only incidents of violence were discussed. But today the confidence of development not violence is clearly visible here," Singh said.

The Union Defence Minister alleged that in the last 70 years, the Congress government had neglected Manipur and other Northeastern states, which reflects the anti-development and anti-Northeast Mindset of the Congress.

"After the formation of the government at the Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a pledge that we will provide good road, rail and air connectivity to every Northeastern state. It took almost 75 years of independence to reach rail connectivity to Manipur. For the first time our PM Narendra Modi has done the work of giving rail connectivity to Manipur," Singh said.

Singh maintained that both the 'face' and 'future' of Northeast are changing rapidly since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over the reins of India.

The Union Defence Minister added, "Manipur was known for its month-long blockades. We have created such a situation in the last few years that the incidents of blockades are now over. The BJP governments have improved the delivery mechanism across the country and made it transparent. Today the people of Manipur are also getting the direct benefits of the schemes of the Centre".

Earlier in the day, Rajnath Singh informed through a tweet that he will be addressing three public meetings during his visit to the poll-bound state on Monday.

"I shall be campaigning in Manipur today. Shall address public meetings at Singjamei, Langthabal and Thangmeiband assembly constituencies. Looking forward to it," Singh tweeted.

Manipur will go to polls in two phases - on February 28 and March 5 - for the elections to  60-Assembly seats.
