CCTV in police stations, Manipur High Court admits

The Manipur High Court has admitted the PIL filed in connection with the Supreme Court’s directive on December 2, 2020, to install CCTV cameras in all police stations across the country.

The Manipur High Court has admitted the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in connection with the Supreme Court’s directive on December 2, 2020, to install CCTV cameras in all police stations across the country.

The High Court also directed the respondents to file a status report in the context of the Supreme Court’s order passed in Special Leave Petition (Criminal) No 3543 of 2020.

The court further informed that the respondents are to submit the status report on October 17 which is also the date of the PIL hearing.

The PIL was filed by one Naothoiba Sarungbam, a law student at LMS Law College.

Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal, Manipur High Court advocate and petitioner counsel B Prem Sharma stated that the PIL was filed against four respondents in total.

“The Supreme Court order maintained that all the CCTV cameras installed in the respective police stations must include proper audio-visual facility; it must have 18 months memory capacity and in the police station with poor power connectivity- solar or wind energy must be used for electricity among others,” he said.

The Finance department would bear all the funds needed for the installation as per the Supreme Court directive, he added.

He highlighted that the Supreme Court had passed the order in light of the various alleged human rights violations and other unwarranted actions that had been reported in various police stations across the country. 

The petitioner was also present during the press meet.
