A student body in Imphal has called for promotion of Manipur products as gifts item during the celebration of Ningol Chakkouba festival in the state which falls on October 27.
"It is indeed a proud moment that the Ningol Chakkouba being the biggest and significant festival of the Meitei community in Manipur is now celebrated by various other communities in the state," Umanglai Sinpang Sintha Maheiroi Lup (USSIL) assistant general secretary Ch Bisanta said while speaking to the media in Imphal Saturday.
Bisanta said people of the state must know how Ningol Chakkouba festival can boost the state's economy.
During every Ningol Chakkouba festival, gift items, mostly imported goods which are easily available in markets in Imphal, are bought, he said. As a result, the festival creates a big boom for non-local traders, while the state's economy dips, he added.
Pointing out that the quality of various products made in Manipur are not any lesser than the products brought from other states, Bisanta called upon the people of the state to buy local goods as gift items and help improve the state's economy.
On behalf of USSIL, Bisanta extended Ningol Chakkouba greetings to all women in Manipur.
