Breast cancer is the leading cancer among women in the state, Dr Th Dhabali, chairman, Babina Group, Imphal, said on Friday.
In view of it, Dr Dhabali stressed the need to stay conscious about the symptoms of breast cancer, saying early detection can help cure the disease.
He was speaking at an event organised to raise awareness about the early detection of breast cancer at Hotel Classic Grande in Imphal East. It was organised by Fujifilm India Pvt Ltd.
Dr Dhabali said that around 12.2 per cent of the cancers detected among women in Manipur are breast cancers and it is similar to the global average.
Stressing the need to remain conscious but not to be over conscious about breast cancer, he stated that self-examination of any abnormality should be the first procedure followed by consultation of physician and conducting of mammography for those above 35 years and ultrasound scan for those below 35 years if they found any abnormality in the breast during self-examination.
Stating that Fujifilm has installed its cutting-edge Amulet Innovality, a highly advanced breast cancer diagnostic tool at Babina Healthcare and Shija Hospitals, which enables women to diagnose breast cancer at an early stage since the last two-and-half years, he said that the machine is convenient to use and gives good resolutions.
However, as private diagnostic centres cannot give concessions on every aspect, he drew the attention of the state government for installing such advanced mammograms at government hospitals.
As per the data from Fujifilm, India has the sixth highest rate of breast cancer in Asia and the tenth highest in the world when compared to other population registries.
One in every 22 women get breast cancer at some point in their lifetime and the biggest reason for this is lack of awareness amongst patients, and reaching out to the doctor during their last stages of the disease.
Japanese Advisor, Medical Division of Fujifilm India, Shunsuke Honda and Dr Silpa from IMC, Mumbai also spoke during the awareness programme as resource persons.
