Maria Pame, who brought home a gold medal in boxing (50-52 kg weight category) during the REC Open Talent Hunt Boxing Program-2 at Guwahati was felicitated on Sunday by felicitated by Zeme Naga Council Manipur (ZNCM) and Zeme Pui Baudi Manipur (ZPBM) at Zeme Baptist Church Imphal, Kekrupat.
On the occasion, ZNCM general secretary Etalakpe Hoi said it has been a proud moment for the Zeme community, which has never made its name in the sports arena.
Encouraging her to achieve greater heights and bigger feats even in the future, he said, “Your triumph has brought immense pride and joy to the Zeme community and the broader Zeliangrong community, and we are honoured to celebrate your exceptional accomplishment.”
ZPBM president Ajeile Newme also congratulated the boxer and said the tribe women organisation is even more proud in the fact that a female is bringing such big laurels from boxing, a sport mainly considered to be male-centric sport.
Giving best wishes for all her future endeavours, she assured that all mothers of the Zeme community will always be behind her back and support her in prayer and spirit.
Maria Pame is the third daughter of Ramsaulak Pame and Manailiu Pame from Impa village, under Tousem subdivision of Tamenglong district.
After winning her gold medal from regional level, Maria will next take part in the national level in the grand finale of 2nd REC Talent Hunt at Rohtak, Haryana from October 6 to 22, 2024.
The talent hunt is organised by Boxing Federation of India (BFI) in association with Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) Limited and Sports Authority of India.
