Manipur BJP on Wednesday threw down the gauntlet to the Congress party, questioning its commitment to safeguarding the integrity and interests of the indigenous people of Manipur.

Addressing the media at Thambal Shanglen in Imphal, BJP Manipur spokesperson Johnson Elangbam launched a scathing attack on the Congress.

He alleged that the Congress party is misleading the public by making contradictory statements at the Centre and in the state, causing confusion among the people.

Elangbam further raised concerns about the silence of Congress leaders at the national level regarding the demand for a separate administration in Manipur by a particular community.

He questioned the reason behind their reluctance to announce their stance on such a crucial issue.

In contrast, Elangbam highlighted the BJP's unwavering commitment to the state's integrity and cited Home Minister Amit Shah's clear assurance that the BJP would protect Manipur's integrity at all costs.

The BJP spokesperson also criticised the inability of the INDIA bloc, of which the Congress is a member, to take a clear stance on the NRC.

The NRC is essential in combating the influx of illegal immigrants and protecting the rights of the indigenous population, he emphasised adding that BJP assured cent percent implementation of NRC in Manipur.

In a particularly pointed remark, Elangbam expressed disappointment over INC national leader Bhakta Charan Das's recent comments blaming the Meetei community for the crisis in Manipur, which went viral on social media.

He described such statements as irresponsible and indicative of the Congress party's lack of understanding of the complexities of the Manipur issue.

The escalating war of words between the BJP and Congress comes at a time of heightened political tension in Manipur, with both parties vying for the support of the state's diverse communities ahead of upcoming elections.
