Bishnupur gets Legal Aid Defense Counsel System

Justice A Bimol Singh stated that the LADCS aims to provide free legal aid and assistance to poor and needy individuals with respect to representation or conducting trial and appeals including all miscellaneous work in all criminal matters.

The High Court of Manipur justice cum executive chairman of Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA), A Bimol Singh, and justice A Guneshwar Sharma, also chairperson, High Court Legal Services Committee (HCLSC) inaugurated the office of the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System (LADCS) for the district of Bishnupur at Bishnupur Court Complex, on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, Justice A Bimol Singh stated that the LADCS aims to provide free legal aid and assistance to poor and needy individuals with respect to representation or conducting trial and appeals including all miscellaneous work in all criminal matters.

Further, he highlighted that offices of the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System for the state of Manipur were initially implemented for 4 districts namely Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur where legal aided cases are maximum.

However, for the remaining five districts namely Senapati, Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Chandel and Tamenglong where the legal aided cases are minimal, the Legal Aid Defense Counsels which are recruited for the Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur will be utilised on rotational basis as per the requirements.

The Inaugural Program was attended by Letkho Kipgen, District and Sessions Judge, Bishnupur; Ojesh Mutum, member secretary, MASLSA; Sonykumar Nepram, OSD, MASLSA; Sadananda Sorokhaibam, additional member secretary, MASLSA; Km Sharda Yengkhom, chief judicial magistrate cum secretary, DLSA Bishnupur; Ahanthem Leonid, JMFC/CJJD, Noney along with President and Executive Members of Bishnupur District Bar Association; advocates; Front office of District Legal Services Authority; staff of Manipur State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority, Bishnupur.

LADCS is a scheme under the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), to provide free legal aid to poor needy people facing criminal cases to defend themselves with respect to representation or conducting trial and appeals including all miscellaneous work in all criminal matters.
