Chief Scientist of CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology H Birkumar Singh said, Manipur being a part of Indo-Burma Biodiversity hotspot is not a permanent feature and the status may change due to human intervention complemented by climate change.

Birkumar was speaking as a guest of honour on Wednesday during observance of International Day for Biological Diversity held at State Botanical Garden, Khonghampat (Laikon), Imphal West. The observation was conducted under the theme ‘Be Part of the Plan’.

He said, a large number of endemic flora and fauna are available in the state and many are yet to be properly identified and scientifically studied. So, lots of research is needed in the field.

Due to several factors man-made and natural causes, the number of endemic plant and animal species are diminishing, he added.

Speaking as the chief guest Additional CS (Forest, Environment and Climate Change) MH Khan assured that he will try to reach out to the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Ministry of Forest and Environment to get more funds for river rejuvenation and conservation of biological diversity of Manipur.

MH Khan claimed that as compared to past decades the biological diversity of Manipur is improving under the leadership of the present chief minister. However, mass awareness is needed, he said.

He said that the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change under the guidance of the chief minister various necessary steps are being taken up.

In the last few years, community ponds are decreasing and even preservation of Loktak lake is needed as it is also a part of biological diversity, he added.

To preserve and protect the biological diversity of Manipur, he will also reach the ministry concerned to get more funds including rejuvenation of Imphal river, said MH Khan.

Chairman of Technical committee, State Wetlands Authority Kh Shamungou spoke on the rich fauna of the land.

He said, although a large number of animal species have been identified with the state because of its unique biodiversity many have either disappeared or reduced in number.

He also warned about invasive species of plants and animals.

As a part of the function, 10 media fellows, who were selected for 5th Manipur State Level Media Fellowship in Climate Change Reporting during 2024-25, were given official letters of selection.

Presided over by Director of Environment and Climate Change T Brajakumar Singh, the function was attended by several activists.
