Bihari traders in Manipur's Churachandpur shutdown shops in protest against killing

One Anan Gupta from Rota district of Bihar living in Churachandpur, Manipur was shot dead in district HQ by an armed miscreant on Friday.

All shops owned or run by Biharis in Churachandpur district, particularly at New Bazar area where a non-local trader Anan Gupta was killed by an armed miscreant, remain closed on Friday as a sign of protest.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of Anan were flown to his hometown in Bihar on Saturday afternoon after a post mortem examination was conducted at RIMS.

General secretary of Bihari Society Shiv Shankar, who went to Imphal Airport to see off the body, said that the family decided to have the last rites carried out at Bihar. The society plans to shut down their shops and godowns until Monday to condemn the killing, he announced. He said that they will also hold a meeting to decide their future course of action .The case is under investigation with an FIR lodged at Churachandpur Police Station.

Meanwhile, the Zomi Student Federation (ZSF) general headquarters condemned the terrorist activity of killing a trader. Such action by armed man, inside the town area should not occur again, the student body stated. The ZSF is always ready to help in maintaining law and order, and promote a peaceful environment, it stated. ZSF further urged the police and other law enforcement agencies to be on vigil while recalling the recent threat and demand made to private schools by valley based UG groups.

Kuki National Organisation (KNO) also strongly condemned the killings of Anan Gupta, by stating that such killing is against peaceful co-existence. Each and every soul must be respected and shown due courtesy, irrespective of cast or creed, KNO stated. The miscreant must be brought to task and justice done, it added.

Convenor of Lamka Traders, Sales and Employees Association (LATSEA) CT Lian also said that they condemn the act of brutality that was witnessed on Friday evening and urged all to stop such actions against traders.

He further appealed to all for cooperation and urged help from the MLAs, Churachandpur Police, Assam Rifles and the town commanders of UG groups of the district to stop such activities, deliver justice to the victims and punish the perpetrator(s).
