A 180-feet-long bailey bridge along National Highway-102 B connecting Manipur and Mizoram near Khuanggin village in Churachandpur reportedly collapsed early Monday.
The bridge, which is also a lifeline of the area, is situated on the way to the border town of Sinzawl village which is about 135 kilometres from Churachandpur. It was built in 1994 and was repaired recently as the highway was under construction.
Two heavy duty trucks which were passing through the bridge when it collapsed fell along with the bridge.
Songtal village chief G Thiankholian has urged the general manager of NHIDCL, which is presently working on renovation of NH 102 B to take immediate steps to repair or restore the bridge as early as possible.
The village chief urged for the construction of a diversion to avoid inconvenience to the travellers and prevent hindrances to the villagers along the National Highway.
Meanwhile, sources said that a new diversion was constructed at the side of the collapsed bridge on Monday afternoon by NHIDCL. Another RCC bridge is being constructed at the road construction site, as per NHIDCL officials.
