Axe wielding attacker shot dead

A man was shot dead when he attacked a family at Changangei Uchekkon Awang under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West.

An axe wielding man who charged into a residence and attacked a family was shot dead, while a family member was left wounded with a bullet injury around 8.30 am in Imphal West on Friday, sources said.

According to sources, the incident occurred at Changangei Uchekkon Awang under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West, and the injured has been identified as one Romeo Thoiba, son of Laishram Thoiba of Changangei Uchekkon Awang.

The sources said that the unidentified attacker came into the house of Lishram Thoiba’s son, L Bashanta, 46, from the northern side of their residence around 8.20 am.

At first, they asked the unidentified man what his business was and inquired if he was looking to visit their toilet but he did not respond, as per the sources. As the man appeared lost, they pointed him towards the direction of the main road, the sources said.

“He went out towards the road but suddenly turned back and picked up our axe that was kept at the side of the house... He then attempted to assault one Thoiba’s wife Juboti and eldest son L Romeo,49, by chasing them," the sources said.

As the situation escalated, they started calling out the rest of the family members to bring out the licensed gun, the sources said, adding that Bashanta brought out his licence Double Barrel gun from inside the house and fired a shot while Romeo wrestled with the attacker to snatch the axe out of his hands. The attacker was shot in the back and died on the spot.

Romeo also sustained bullet injury on his right thigh. He was rushed to RIMS for treatment and further referred to Raj Medicity hospital, the sources said.

SP Imphal West S Ibomcha arrived at the spot to take stock of the situation. Lamphel Police Station registered a case. A team of State Forensic Science Laboratory Team also arrived at the spot to investigate the crime scene in the presence of an executive magistrate.

From the body, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) issued by OC Mao Police Station on March 22 was recovered. Details such as “Gobin Basumatary, son of Budang Basumatary, Home State -Assam, Local Resident-ABCI Infrastructure Pvt Ltd., Place of Stay- Kangchup, Purpose-Road Construction” were found in the permit.

After completing all formalities, the body was deposited at RIMS mortuary. Both the licensed gun and its owner L Bashanta were picked up by Lamphel Police Station in connection with the case.
