Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Wednesday asserted that proper research and awareness on the medicinal floras in Manipur was vital to promote accessibility.
She was speaking at the distribution of honey bee boxes and quality planting materials of medicinal and aromatic plants to farmers under CSIR - Floriculture and Aroma Mission projects at CSIR- North East Institute of Science and Technology branch laboratory.
A book titled ‘Hidak Kanaraba Pambishing’ (A treatise of medicinal, aromatic and economic plants) was also released during the event.
She maintained that proper exploration of medicinal and economic plants could aid in boosting the farming sector of the country, especially Manipur.
“This has the potential to help farmers, especially those displaced farmers. Various schemes and policies can be enacted to do so,” she said.
She noted that the usefulness of medicinal plants was widely felt during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We need to promote the use of medicinal plants and increase awareness to exhort cultivation,” she said. She also pointed out the need to promote marketability of farm produce which can seriously upgrade the economic sector.
The governor also distributed honey bee boxes to bee farmers during the event.
Director of CSIR- North East Institute of Science and Technology (Jorhat) VM Tiwari, director of CSIR- Central Food Technological Research Institute (Mysuru) Sridevi Annapurna Singh among others were present at the event.
