The Assam Rifles battalions in Manipur celebrated the 188th Assam Rifles Raising Day with various welfare activities for school children, orphans and others, as a part of its service to the nation, and paid tributes to martyrs on Friday.
Joining the observation, the Tamenglong Battalion under the aegis of Jwalamukhi Sector organised a visit to nearby orphanages and schools at Tamenglong, Kahulong, Awangkhul, Tamei and Dikuiram and carried out celebrations with the children.
The programme was organised to motivate the young generation to come forward in service of the nation and spread the word of goodwill and compassion, stated a statement issued by Adjutant Major Ganesh Radhakrishnan in Tamenglong.
He said that Assam Rifles have been partners in the developmental journey of Northeast India and always ready to deliver beyond call of duty. Thus, they are rightly cherished as 'Friends of The Northeast', he said.
“The tales of sacrifice, courage and friendship of Assam Rifles wherein they beat all odds of harsh terrain and weather of North East have always been an inspiration for people all over the nation. The values derived from distinguished service in Assam Rifles should be imbibed by people among all walks of life. The force has been serving the nation for the last 187 years, earning many laurels at all levels,” Radhakrishnan said.
He said the celebrations also included distribution of sweets and Assam Rifles flags and felicitation of young achievers from various schools and orphanages by the Battalion.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commandant Tamenglong Battalion also remembered the multitude of bravehearts who sacrificed their lives defending the sovereignty of the nation.
The Sehlon Battalion under the aegis of Headquater Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) also conducted wreath laying ceremony for all Martyrs of Assam Rifles, special Sainik Sammelan for Troops, screening of short movie on unit history & barakhana.
The occasion was celebrated with full zeal and enthusiasm. The Assam Rifles remain committed in service to the nation, it stated.
