Army Chief General Manoj Pande on Saturday arrived in Imphal. The Army chief who is on a two-day visit to violence-hit Manipur arrived at the Imphal Airport by Indian Airforce flight Bharatiya Bayu Sena
The Army chief will visit various locations where he will interact with the local formation commanders and obtain a first hand account of the situation obtained on ground. He will also interact with the troops, according to a statement issued by the Union Defence Ministry.
On Sunday, the Army chief will meet Governor Anusuiya Uikey, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Kuldiep Singh, the chief security advisor of Manipur, to discuss and deliberate over the current situation and future trajectory, in order to restore normalcy at the earliest, the ministry stated.
Owing to the internal security situation in Manipur, the state administration had requisitioned Army and Assam Rifles on May 3.
The Union Defence Ministry stated that the Army and Assam Rifles have deployed 135 columns to diffuse the situation by carrying out active domination of sensitive and fringe areas. Approximately 35,000 civilians were evacuated to safe zones and immediate relief and humanitarian aid was provisioned to displaced civilians by the Army and Assam Rifles, the ministry added.
