Areca nuts worth Rs 4.8 crore seized in Kamjong

A team of Assam Rifles personnel foiled illegal smuggling of areca nuts in Kamjong district of Manipur on August 22 and 24, seizing the same, worth around Rs 4.8 crore in international market.

The IGAR(S) said in a release that based on reliable inputs about movement of contraband items along the India-Myanmar border, a team of Assam Rifles launched to dominate the suspected area and on thorough search, 209 bags of suspected areca nuts (supari) worth approximately Rs 2.50 crore (as per international market rate) were found illegally smuggled in three Myanmarese trucks in General Area Sangka Lok Nala track (Near BP-99) through international border towards Indian side.

A total of 209 bags of areca nuts valued at Rs 2.50 crore along with three Myanmarese vehicles were handed over to Forest Department, Kamjong for further legal proceedings, the IGAR(S) added.

In a similar operation, a team of Assam Rifles launched to dominate the suspected area after receiving credible inputs. On extensive search of the vehicle, 190 bags of suspected areca nuts (Supari) worth approximate Rs 2.34 crore (as per international market rate) were found illegally smuggled in three Myanmarese trucks in General Area Sangka Lok Nala track (Near BP-98) through international border towards Indian side, the IGAR(S) said.

The 190 bags of areca nuts valued at Rs 2.34 crore along with three apprehended individuals named Wynwyn, Thuntun and Aungshun were handed over to the Forest Department, Kamjong for further legal proceedings.
