A joint operation led by Assam Rifles successfully prevented a potential infiltration attempt by valley based insurgent groups near the Indo-Myanmar border in Kamjong district, Manipur on April 17.
The operation, which involved columns of 8 Assam Rifles and 40 Assam Rifles, was launched following credible intelligence reports, as per a statement.
It said that the operation was concentrated in the general area of the Makhlangkhong River corridor along the border. Intelligence sources confirmed the infiltration of suspected individuals along the Makhlangkhong River axis towards village Kangkum, under the jurisdiction of Kasom Khullen Police Station.
Five suspected individuals were apprehended in the vicinity of village Kangkum at approximately 6 pm on April 18, 2024. Among the apprehended individuals were three active members of proscribed insurgent groups, Kangleipak Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), it mentioned.
It further stated that the apprehended individuals were identified as highly active and well-trained cadres proficient in handling various modern and sophisticated automatic weapons and explosives, including AK 47, M-16, HK series weapons, Chinese Lathode gun, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and other warlike stores. It is believed that these insurgent groups had infiltrated the border with the intent to wage war against the Government of India.
Additionally, two suspected cadres of NSCN (I-M) were also detained in the same vicinity. They were allegedly providing support, including food, to the apprehended groups. A substantial amount of cash totaling Rs 1,86,720 was seized from the apprehended individuals, it stated.
The apprehended cadres are Themreiso Siro, 40, and Lawungsem alias Nongthang, 46, who are suspected cadres of NSCN (I-M), Thounaojam Jiten Singh, 36, and Ahanthem Angou Meitei alias Piba, 26, who are cadres of KYKL and Ahongshangbam Amuba, 41 of PREPAK, it added.
