Andro Violence: 12 persons in police custody

During the course of the investigation, the police team seized six damaged four-wheeler vehicles and seven empty cartridges, a bulletproof jacket which is unauthorised to civilians, said the IO in the report.

Duty Magistrate Imphal East on February 20 remanded 12 persons into three days in police custody, who were arrested by Andro Police in connection with the confrontation and mob violence between the supporters of NPP candidate and BJP candidate of Andro Assembly constituency on the night of February 18 at Yairipok Tulihal Awang Leikai.

While seeking the remand in the court, the IO of the case submitted a report that 12 persons were arrested in connection with the case on February 20 morning by a team of Andro Police and Imphal East commando personnel.

It pointed out that on February 18 late night a suo-motu case was registered based on the information that the same day at around 11.5 pm there was a confrontation between supporters of NPP candidate Lourembam Sanjoy and BJP candidate Th Shyamkumar, which later triggered a chain of similar incidents.

The IO stated that besides property damage, the confrontation between the two sides resulted in injuries of several individuals.

Moreover, the report stated that some of the individuals accused in the incident admitted to their crimes. As such, the IO prayed for custodial interrogation so as to enable the arrest of their associates who were involved in the case and for smooth investigation and prayed for three days police custody remand.

The court on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of the IO remanded them into police custody till February 22.
