Amid the tense situation in violence-hit Manipur, the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) said the unabated escalation of violence in the state should have been pre-empted and contained had the government acted timely. It urges timely government intervention to prevent the further escalation of violence.

"The failure on the part of the government in containing the violence is more than evident in the context of present conflict in Manipur. The violence has severely affected the age-old fraternal harmony in Manipur," AMUCO said in a statement.

Mentioning that the communal violence erupted in Churachandpur district following the Tribal unity march that was organised on May 3, 2023 by ATSUM in the hill districts of Manipur, AMUCO called upon the government to prevent further escalation and occurrence of unfortunate incidents in the future in the state.

The organisation expressed deep concern and apprehension of the present tension escalating unless a timely intervention is made.

Also, upholding the spirit of co-existence and collective development, the AMUCO called upon all responsible citizens of Manipur and the government to make an earnest attempt to reach out to the roots and origin of the present tension to avoid further escalation of the situation and the occurrence of such unfortunate incidents in the future.

"Such a need is warranted due to the evident cover up of the actual concerns of the common citizens," it said, adding that "several forces are apparently seen to be orchestrated to flare up the situation".

The organisation also said it is the firm stand of AMUCO that no undue advantage should be taken to establish separate administrations in Manipur.

"As Manipur is home to multiple ethnicities, exclusive community base demands should be avoided, and there is a need for inter-community communication and reflection, even if it is to be pursued so," it said.

AMUCO also said the government should, without any delay, ensure the safety of the persons stranded in relief camps and ensure their safe return to their respective homes. It also urged the government to ensure the distribution of relief materials such as food, water, medical aids, etc. without further delay.

It appeals to all stakeholders to refrain from malicious propaganda and fake news that can have a detrimental effect on restoration of peace and harmony.
