The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has stated that INC Candidate of 1-Inner Manipur Lok Sabha Election-2024 Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has received threats from unknown individuals.
A statement addressed to DGP Manipur Rajiv Singh on Friday stated that the candidate himself and the MPCC’s legal department wrote applications to the DGP’s office as well as the office of the Chief Electoral Office, Manipur for taking up necessary security measures by providing adequate security personnel for his protection. However, no security personnel have been deployed/provided to the candidate, it stated.
About 3 pm on Thursday, some unknown person came to Bimol Akoijam’s house and asked for his whereabouts, it said. In his absence, the unknown persons told his family members that Bimol Akoijam must meet them at Kombirei Garden on Friday about 8 am, it mentioned.
Around five-six unidentified persons came again to his house after a gap of around 1 hour and repeatedly told the family members that the candidate must not disobey their order.
In such a situation, the DGP has not provided adequate security personnel at the earliest; there may be untoward incidents which may not be compensated in terms of money since he has reasonable apprehension to his life at risk, it stated.
If such threats continue repeatedly against the candidates, there may not be free and fair practice of the election. MPCC further suggested providing maximum numbers of security personnel particularly from Central Forces like CRPF at the earliest, it added.
Another statement addressed to chief electoral officer Pradip Pradeep Kumar Jha mentioned that MPCC president K Meghachandra along with a team of Congress MLAs met the DGP, Manipur and also submitted an application for providing security personnel for Bimol Akoijam as soon as possible, and he assured them to do the needful, it added.
