In a first of its kind in Manipur, a student of Government Polytechnic Engineering, Takyelpat, Imphal West, pursuing 6th semester in the college, invented an artificial intelligence robot and demonstrated some of its abilities in front of the media on Friday.

The inventor of the robot, Thokchom Dayananda, is pursuing a 6th semester diploma in mechanical engineering at Government Polytechnic Engineering college, Takyelpat, Imphal West.

Dayananda told the media during the demonstration of his robot “Baymax” that the robot is fully operated under artificial intelligence. Baymax has the ability to speak 30 different languages and can understand 100 languages excluding Manipuri language.

Elaborating on the specification of the robot, Dayananda said the project of manufacturing the robot took around 18 months. He highlighted that the robot can understand 100 different languages with the ability to translate language. The robot can respond precisely according to the needs of the user, he added.

With the camera installed on the body of Baymax, it can identify any object which is put in front of the robot. One of the most interesting features of the robot is being a robot run under AI; it can interact with any person.

He further said the robot is running with the help of the internet but due to slow internet connectivity the robot takes some time while responding to any query or command.

“But I am trying to solve the problem and also I am trying to upgrade the robot so that it can understand the Manipuri language and speak Manipuri language”, said Dayananda.

Dayananda said he was inspired to make his robot after he watched the film ‘Big Hero 6’ produced by Disney in 2014.

Other missing features that Dayananda wanted to upgrade are movement of the robot, fast response and to install Manipuri language for speaking and understanding.

Principal of the engineering college, Taiyenjam Chandrakumar, said Dayananda has been able to achieve some of the positive outcomes from his knowledge, patience, creativity and ability. He said many advanced robots have been invented in other places of the world but the college feels appreciated and proud that a student pursuing a diploma in the college can invent an AI robot.

However, there are some drawbacks in the robot but the college is hoping the issues will be solved and will be upgraded by Dayananda, the principal said.

Encouragement and motivation is needed so that Dayananda can achieve more goals in his life after studying more robotic features, the principal said.
