After Nambul River, the government along with various stakeholders on Thursday started cleaning of Imphal River, which is one of the most polluted rivers in Manipur.
A month-long ‘Cleaning of Imphal River Campaign under the River Rejuvenation Programme’ was launched by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and Water Resources department along with other stakeholders like district administration, town committee, and ADC among others
Speaking during the launching function, joint director of environment and climate change T Brajakumar said that the government is setting priority on reduction of wastes generation and raising awareness apart from cleaning the river in 18 wards of the town.

He further said that the target is to fully clean the Imphal River as per direction of the National Green Tribunal and Chief Minister N Biren.
Informing that the Imphal River cleaning drive is along the stretch from Kangpokpi, where it originates, to Sekmai for phase-I, he said that a month-long awareness campaign will begin from October 4 at each and every wards of the town.
He said that focus has also been kept on introducing door-to-door garbage collection at each household across the 18 wards.
The target is to change people’s habits and to privatise the door-to-door collection for self sustenance for the maintenance of the operation, he said. He further informed that the aim is to stop domestic waste/solid waste from polluting the Imphal River.
He said establishment areas like markets, hospitals, offices, shops among others will have to mandatory pay fees for the collection of solid waste, which will be done on a daily basis. He informed that in case the campaign is successful then it will be continued for a few months.

Meanwhile, additional DC of Kangpokpi district L Khobung said that the district administration will extend possible support in making the campaign successful.
It may be noted that earlier this month, Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai along with Kangpokpi DC Kengoo Zuringla and officials of Water Resources department and Directorate of Environment and Climate Change had inspected the Imphal River, Makhan River and Sekmai River banks.
