Various CSOs and organisations have jointly established, ‘Environment Protection Union Manipur, EPU’, an ad-hoc committee on July 2 to protect and safeguard the pressing environmental issues facing in the region.
A release issued by publicity in charge of Environment Protection Union Manipur stated that the emergence of deforestation has disrupted the natural balance which led to a catastrophic consequences and severity of floods.
Due to massive deforestation, land loses its ability to absorb water, leading to increased surface runoff and higher flood peaks, it stated.
Despite funds being earmarked for Loktak Lake conservation, the lack of visible developmental work raises concerns about the efficacy of these efforts, it added.
The Wasil stretch, once a significant waterway, has become severely constricted due to encroachment, making it impassable even for two-wheeled vehicles, it said. Despite efforts by civil society organizations (CSOs) and government initiatives, developmental work remains insufficient, it stated.
It calls on organisations, local clubs, and relevant authorities to support the EPU and for concerted efforts in EPU developmental projects to protect and preserve the environment for future generations.
