After over six years in jail in the 2014 murder case of Thongram (N) Lourembam (O) Ranjita, Laishram Ibomcha Meitei from Khoirom Mathak Leikai Yairipok was finally acquitted and freed but is unsettled and scared as his two houses and a brick field were set on fire by the violence then.
Speaking to the media on Sunday at the Manipur Press Club, Laishram Ibomcha said that the mob violence that erupted in the locality following the incident burnt down his two houses and a brick field and his family members were driven away too. Broken and pained by it and the damage and hardship caused to his family members, Ibomcha urged the state government and locality, who expelled them, to allow his family to enter their houses as he has been proven innocent and acquitted from the case.
Ibomcha also appealed to the people not to indulge in any form of mob violence as false allegations can destroy the lives of innocent people and their families.
“I was not accused and my family requested the then government for a CBI investigation but that was not listened to. But now, God has saved me”, Ibomcha said.
Ibomcha also lamented that the only way of generating income, his brick field, was set on fire and his family had to flee from their houses along with his grandson and granddaughters. Now, nothing is left but he wants to settle in his locality, he said and urged the locality to allow them to enter.
The court acquitted Laishram Ibomcha Meitei from charge levelled against him in the 2014 Ranjita murder case. The court stated that the prosecution failed to prove the charges u/s 376 IPC and 302 IPC against the accused Laishram Ibomcha Meitei beyond all reasonable doubt.
