AAMSU observes Manipuri Identity Day 2022 in Silchar

Manipuri Identity Day 2022 was observed on Tuesday in Assam in remembrance of the patriotic movement taken up by the AAMSU on May 17, 1999 against the restriction to impose the word “Manipuri” while terming the Bishnupiya community.

The 23rd Manipuri Identity Day 2022 was observed on Tuesday by the central committee of the All Assam Manipuri Students Union (AAMSU) at Gandhi Bhavan in Silchar, Assam.

The day was commemorated in remembrance of the patriotic movement taken up by the AAMSU on May 17, 1999 against the restriction to impose the word “Manipuri” while terming the Bishnupiya community.

During the movement a large number of irate agitators stormed the DC office of Silchar and vandalised the office property. Many agitators sustained injuries while many served judicial custody terms, according to AAMSU.

Today’s observance was presided by advisor of AAMSU Saikhom Kamlakanta and was attended by editor of Arambai Phuritsabam Biramani; former general secretary of AAMSU Laishram Birkumar; youth front general secretary of All Assam Manipuri Muslim Jiaur Rahman; president of All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Coordination Committee K Aruna; president of Assam Manipuri Meira Paibi Apunba Lup Sanathoi Devi as dias members.

During the programme, assistant professor of Janata College, Kabuganj ND Hodamba spoke on the topic, “Assam gi Manipuri Lon gi Houjik Oiriba Fibam amadi Masidagi Kanaba Pambei,” social entrepreneur Ashangbam Swapan spoke on “Ngasi Oiriba Manipuri Khunai Asigi Saktam” and former vice-president Fanjowbam Lokenath spoke on “Assam gi Manipuri Khunai da Assam gi Khudol.”
