A combined team of Bishnupur district police and a column of 16 Assam Rifles seized two kg of contraband opium and arrested three drug peddlers, including two women from Potshangbam Maning area, Bishnupur district on Sunday evening.
The arrested persons have been identified as Warepam Reshma Devi, 40, wife of T John Zou; T Neinu Zou, 38, daughter of Thang Nga Zou of Chothe ward number 12 and Pukhrambam Shyam Singh, 46, son of P Tampha Singh of Nachou Panthong ward number 6.
Police reported that the combined team under the command of officer-in-charge, Commando, Bishnupur unit, Y Shaktishen under the supervision of additional superintendent of police (Ops), Roni Mayengbam and under the overall guidance of superintendent of police, Bishnupur district, N Herojit Meeitei along with a column of 16 Assam Rifles conducted frisking and checking at Potshangbam Maning area.
During the police action, the three persons were detained for verification while coming in two different scooters (Activa) bearing registration number MN06S D0961, red in colour and MN05 B4213, blue in colour along Tiddim road.
On checking of the vehicles, two kg of contraband items suspected to be opium were detected packed in a plastic label marked as ‘sweet toast’ and ‘bright detergent’.
On spot enquiry, after they disclosed their identity, revealed that the two packets containing opium were given to them by one Deban of Malom for selling to prospective buyers. Accordingly, they were arrested and the detected opium seized at around 6:30 pm.
The seized items along with the three persons have been handed over to Bishnupur police station for further action.
