An Indian medical student was on Tuesday killed in shelling in Ukraine's Kharkiv, the External Affairs Ministry said, adding that the Ministry is in touch with his family.

"With profound sorrow we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted.

The student was a final year MBBS student from Karnataka. He was killed when the Russian soldiers blew up a government building on Tuesday. 

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to extend his condolence over the death of the Indian student and reiterated that the Government of India needs a strategic plan for safe evacuation.

"Received the tragic news of an Indian student Naveen losing his life in Ukraine. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. I reiterate, GOI needs a strategic plan for safe evacuation. Every minute is precious," the Congress leader tweeted.
