Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 1944 in Mumbai and became the youngest Indian prime minister at the age of 40 after his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984. He served as the prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989.
Remembering him on his 78th birth anniversary and his remarkable statesmanship, Congress party leaders poured tributes to the great leader - "a rare species in politics".
His son Rahul Gandhi and daughter, INC general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi posted series of tweets, photos and videos on Twitter, paying homage to the former prime minister. One video was captioned with a quote by Rajiv Gandhi: “I dream of India Strong, Independent, Self-Reliant and in the front rank of the nations of the world, in the service of mankind.”
MP Jairam Ramesh described Rajiv Gandhi as a rare species in politics--a good, decent and sensitive man.
"N.P. Ullekh's fine book, ‘The Untold Vajpayee’ reveals how Rajiv Gandhi's concern and magnanimity saved Vajpayee's life by his own admission. Rajiv Gandhi wasn’t just an impactful PM. He was that rare species in politics—a good, decent and sensitive man," Ramesh tweeted on Saturday.
MP Shashi Tharoor: "#RememberingRajivGandhi on what would have been his 78th birthday. He piloted the nation to greater heights but was cruelly snatched from us in mid-flight".
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
