Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary.

"On his birth anniversary, tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi," Modi tweeted.

Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest Indian prime minister at the age of 40 after his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated. He served as the sixth prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989.

Born on August 20, 1944 in Mumbai, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
