Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia on her birth anniversary, saying she was synonymous with courage and foresight.
"On her birth anniversary, tributes to Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Ji. She was synonymous with courage and foresight. She devoted her life to serving others. Sharing what I had said during one of the previous #MannKiBaat programmes about her outstanding personality," Modi said in a Twitter post.
A prominent Indian political leader and mother of late Congress party political leader Madhavrao Scindia, Vijaya Raje Scindia was known popularly as the Rajmata of Gwalior.
Born on October 12, 1919 at Sagar in present-day Madhya Pradesh as Lekha Divyeshwari Devi, the eldest child of Thakur Mahendra Singh of the Kotla State, now Uttar Pradesh, the Rajmata died at age 81, on January 25, 2001.
Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia entered politics in 1957 when she contested and won the Guna Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh on a Congress ticket. She, however, left Congress in later years and was made BJP national vice-president in 1980 and held the post till 1998, when she stepped down and quit electoral politics on health grounds.
