India reports first bird flu death of 2021 at Delhi's AIIMS

The boy from Haryana was admitted to AIIMS on July 2 with pneumonia and leukemia.

India on Wednesday reported its first case of human death due to bird flu or avian influenza in 2021 after an 11-year-old boy, undergoing treatment for H5N1 virus died at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), according to reports.

The boy from Haryana was admitted to AIIMS on July 2 with pneumonia and leukemia.

As per the reports, the Haryana resident tested negative for COVID-19 and further investigation found that he was infected with H5N1 virus.

A team from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been sent to to Haryana for contact tracing and to check if there are more H5N1 cases, the reports added.
