After the setting up of a task force to monitor Monkeypox situation in India, the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday issued an advisory to avoid contracting Monkeypox as the number of infections rise in the country.
India has, so far, reported six confirmed cases, four in Kerala and two in Delhi, and one death of a young man in Kerala on July 30 due to the infection, while a suspected Monkeypox case was reported in Rajasthan.
What to do to prevent the spread of Monkeypox
1. Isolation: The Health Ministry has advised isolating the infected person from others.
2. Hand hygiene: Use hand sanitisers, or wash hands with soap and water
3. Masks and gloves: Cover your mouth with masks and hands with disposable gloves when close to a patient
4. Sanitisation: Use disinfectants to sanitise the environment around.
5. Avoid sharing: Avoid sharing linen, beddings, clothes, towels, among others, with people who have tested positive for the infection.
6. Laundry: To wash soiled linen or laundry of patients and those of non-infected persons separately
7. Avoid gatherings: Avoid going to public events even if you exhibit symptoms of the disease.
8. Avoid stigmatisation: Do not stigmatise people who have contracted the disease or suspected patients as well.
9. Ignore rumour: Do not believe any rumour or misinformation.
The WHO had recently declared Monkeypox a global public health emergency of international concern. It says that monkeypox is a virus transmitted to humans from animals, with symptoms similar to smallpox although clinically less severe.
