Dr RML Hospital inaugurates India’s first dedicated OPD for transgenders

Free treatment, investigations and sex change surgery along with other facilities will be available at these OPDs for the Transgender community.

Dr RML Hospital inaugurated India’s first dedicated OPD for transgenders on Sunday, the start of Sewa Pakhwada. The inaugural ceremony was led by Dr (Prof) Ajay Shukla, Director, RML Hospital, Delhi.

The OPD for transgenders was launched with understanding of the difficulties encountered by transgender community to access healthcare services, largely due to discomfort and the fear of discrimination and social apathy, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry stated in a release.

According to the Union Health Ministry, The OPD for transgenders will provide the following 11 facilities:

1. Free Treatment, investigations and sex change surgery.

2. A specialty OPD clinic for transgenders will open every Friday from 2 pm to 4 pm.

3. A separate OPD registration counter for these clinics to facilitate a smooth process.

4. Endocrinology facility with Clinico-psychological assessment.

5. Plastic surgery facility for various related surgeries.

6. Dermatology facility for related issues.

7. Medicine (Physician) facility for various diseases.

8. Urology facility for various related problems.

9. Paediatrics facility for related issues.

10. All other related Blood investigations.

11. Separate washroom facility (Toilet for Gender Neutral/Transgender).
