Reacting to NCERT’s incorrect tagging of ‘Mukna Kangjei’ as an indigenous sport of Mizoram, Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK) on Monday condemned the “mistaken” association of the ancient Manipuri sports with another state in NCERT textbook.
Speaking to the media at SUK office, Imphal, SUK Health & Sports secretary Basko Chanu stated that SUK would discuss the matter as a student body and mete out affirmative measures.
“We will convene an executive meeting and ascertain the root of the misinformation to take requisite measures accordingly,” she said.
It may be mentioned that NCERT's ‘Learning Through Traditional Games’, an 88-page textbook that attempts to identify and describe indigenous games of different states. On page 24 of the publication, the Manipuri game of ‘Mukna Kangjei’ is wrongly given as an indigenous sport of Mizoram.
Meanwhile, the body informed that a state-level ‘Mukna’ (traditional Manipuri wrestling) competition would be organised from May 18-19 at Indoor hall, Manipur University.
Basko added that the competition would be exclusively for students and organised in two separate weight categories (below 60 kg, 60 kg and above).
The form for the competition would be available at the SUK office from May 1, she said.
